Temporary residents
Subject to meeting certain requirements, eligible temporary residents can access their super account if they have departed Australia and their visa has been cancelled or has expired.
You are not eligible if at the time of your application you are:
- an Australian or New Zealand citizen
- a holder of a permanent or current temporary visa
- a temporary resident who has left Australia and receives an income stream
- a holder of a retirement visa (subclasses 405 and 410).
Cbus will be notified as to when to transfer your superannuation account to the ATO. In line with an ASIC class order, you will not receive an Exit Statement or other notification from Cbus when this happens. If you feel you are eligible to access your benefit you should contact Cbus on 1300 361 784 from within Australia or on +61 3 9200 2542 from overseas. If your super has been transferred, you will need to apply through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) by calling 13 10 20 (within Australia) or +61 2 6216 1111 (outside Australia).
How will the payment be taxed?
If your application was made on or after 1 April 2009, the following withholding tax rates will apply:
- 0% for the tax-free component
- 35% for the taxed element of a taxable component
- 45% for an untaxed element of a taxable component.
