CBUS makes it easy for members to say where their super will go

CBUS Super is making it easier for members to decide what happens to their super when they die, and paying those benefits sooner.
Changes introduced today give CBUS members the opportunity to make non-lapsing binding nominations online, which provides direction on who should receive their super when they die.
The Fund’s new streamlined process for paying death benefits where no nomination exists – introduced in December 2025 – has already led to faster claims processing.
CBUS Chief Executive Officer Kristian Fok said the Fund expected that trend to continue as binding nominations increased.
“Making the death claims experience easier for our members gives them peace of mind in the present, and makes a difficult time easier for their loved ones in the future,” he said.
“We’ve already seen the impact of our simplified payment order, which has enabled the Fund to make much faster decisions and significantly reduced lengthy claim-staking processes.
“By increasing the number of binding nominations across our membership, we can make similar improvements across our entire death claims process and improve our member experience across the board.”
CBUS members can no longer make non-binding nominations or lapsing binding nominations, which were valid for three years and required renewal.
The new online non-lapsing binding nomination process is more rigorous and includes stronger identification requirements than the current paper-only process.
CBUS introduced a new streamlined process for paying death benefits where no nomination* exists in December 2025, largely eliminating the need to undertake lengthy and complicated claim staking and cutting weeks from the death claim process.
Instead, claims with no nomination are paid to the surviving current spouse (including same sex, married or de facto partners)**. If there is no surviving current spouse, the benefit is distributed to surviving children in equal shares. If there is no surviving spouse or surviving children, the benefit is directed to the member’s estate.
CBUS also recently introduced the ability for members to lodge TPD, income protection and terminal illness insurance claims through the Fund’s website or mobile app, giving them more clarity and control when facing difficult circumstances.
