A late Age Pension application could cost you money

How to apply for the Age Pension

Think you might be eligible for the Age Pension? Don’t leave it too late. There are no back payments and delays can be costly. Learn how to apply so you don’t miss out.

Nearly 1 in 3 Australians eligible for the Age Pension apply over a year late1. For a couple, that’s potentially $45,000 in missed payments and money that could have supported your retirement lifestyle2.

Starting early is the key

Centrelink will accept Age Pension applications up to 13 weeks before you turn age 67.

But to avoid delays, it’s smart to start gathering documents about four months beforehand. You’ll have time to collect, check and submit everything you need for your payments to start on time.

Don’t let processing times cost you money

At the end of 2024, the average processing time for Age Pension applications was around 32 days, so don’t leave it to the last minute. And remember, payments only start once your eligibility is confirmed, there are no back payments if you miss the start date3.
